Comment lire les marquages, les symboles et les ingrédients sur l'emballage ?

How to read the markings, symbols and ingredients on the packaging?

“I think it’s extremely important to know what’s in beauty products. I want everyone to make an informed choice about the substances they apply to their skin,” says Kaire Miiter, brand manager at Magrada.

I'm glad to see that people are increasingly interested in the ingredients in beauty products and their effects on the body, skin, and hair. However, the list of ingredients on packaging is sometimes so complex that it can be difficult to understand. In this article, we'll explain the art of deciphering ingredient lists.

The list of ingredients (INCI)

The ingredient lists for beauty, hair care, and skin care products are compiled on the same principle as for food products: the list begins with the component that the product contains the most (in the highest concentration) and ends with the ingredient that the product contains the least.

It is important to note the "recipe" to understand the substances contained in a product and determine if it contains components to which you are sensitive or allergic.

If you are unsure about the suitability of a product, apply a small amount to the inside of your arm before first use. Then wait 12 to 24 hours to see if your skin becomes irritated or otherwise reacts.

Internationally, ingredient lists use Latin names. Their English names are often added in parentheses to make the components easier to understand.

Let's take a look at the ingredients in Magrada's Birch Sap Soap: Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, Betula Alba Juice, Cocos Nucifera Oil, Elaeis Guineensis Oil, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter, and Sesamum Indicum Seed Oil. The first ingredient listed is Olea Europaea Fruit Oil, or olive oil, meaning its concentration in the soap is the highest. The second most abundant ingredient by weight is birch sap (Betula Alba Juice). The least abundant ingredient in this soap is sesame seed oil (Sesamum Indicum).

Symbols

Packaging often also displays different symbols. A jar labeled 6M, 12M, or 24M indicates the product's shelf life after opening. Another common symbol is the recycling symbol. Three arrows forming a triangle are called a Möbius loop. This symbol indicates to the consumer that the packaging is reusable. The accompanying number usually indicates the type of plastic, cardboard, or paper.
